Fouad al-Zayat – Big Daddy of the Casino Industry
Fouad al-Zayat also known as “The Fat Man” was known for his lavish gambling and is considered a Whale in the casino industry. Between 1994 and 2006 al-Zayat visited Mayfair’s Aspinall Club more than 600 times in 12 years, staking £91 million and losing £23 million. In 2006, Aspinall’s sued al-Zayat for £2 million plus £50,000 in costs due to gambling debts incurred from blackjack losses in 2000.
He fell out with the casino when they took him to court to recoup one night’s unpaid gambling bill. Mr al-Zayat is renowned for being exceptionally generous, often tipping waitresses thousands of pounds. But despite being well-known in London’s gaming circles, he has stayed out of the limelight. Fouad al-Zayat avoids publicity, rarely gives interviews and photographs of him are almost unknown.
