11: Manny Helmot – Bicycle Accident Payout – $18 M
A Former Commonwealth Games cyclist, Manny Helmot suffered life-threatening injury after being knocked off his bike on a training ride by a passing motorist. He lost his right arm, partial eyesight in the mishap and is no longer able to work. His family feels that he will require 24-hour care for the rest of his life.
Manny and his family with the help of bicycle accident lawyer sued the driver’s insurance company and the court awarded him $19 million in 2010. He, however, received the money 12 years later. The motor driver’s insurance company Tradex were forced to pay out in a lump sum, as this is the only way the fee could be settled in Guernsey. This was probably one of the biggest Personal Injury Compensation Payouts in the UK. His mom and accomplice have been compelled to surrender work to give round the clock care to care for him.
